WHAT IS HARD WATER?
Hard water is ‘raw water’ which is full of minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium. These minerals and imperfections are picked up as water passes through underground rocks and soils.
WHY IS HARD WATER BAD?
When you run hard water through your pipes, eventually, limescale and matter will build up in your plumbing fixtures.
Damage to Your Clothes
Over time clothes being washed in hard water will form a grayish tinge. This can also cause clothes to feel crusty.
Soap Scum Build Up
The soap scum marks your showers and sinks due to the reaction between soap and minerals found in hard water.
Any appliances that use water will have a much shorter life span if hard water is running through the system. This is because scale and matter build up, which will eventually cause you to replace your appliances over time.
HOW DOES A WATER SOFTENER WORK?
As water flows into your home it contains minerals such as Magnesium and Calcium known as hard water. Hard water causes a build up of residue in your plumbing and appliances.
A water softener will remove these hard minerals before entering your home by a process called ion exchange. Ion exchange is when hard water passes thru the media inside the tank called resin. The media acts like a magnet by grabbing the hard minerals in the water and allowing the soft water to flow into your home.
Every few weeks the resin needs to be cleaned. This is where the salt comes in…
The salt (AKA brine) acts as the cleaning agent. It will go thru a process called regeneration which is similar to a washing machine. Example: the water will fill, rinse and repeat making the media magnetic again. All this happens while you sleep and is by a one time setting of your control valve.
HOW CAN I FIND OUT HOW HARD MY WATER IS?
Bring in a sample of water to us and we can test for your hardness.
If you don’t have a water softener currently, then a sample from any faucet will do.If you do have a water softener and need your water tested, make sure your sample it from your bathroom cold.
WHAT SIZE WATER SOFTENER DO I NEED?
When researching what size water softener you may need it is important to take into account a few things like your water hardness, how many people in the home and how many bathrooms you have. Please give us a call and we can better recommend a system for your household.
Once you determine the right size, it is important to get the proper resin for your home. I.E. City VS Well water.
